Revolutionised Food Prep
Microplane is a specialized kitchen tool that has revolutionized the way chefs and home cooks alike approach food preparation. Originally designed as a woodworking tool, the Microplane found its way into kitchens due to its unparalleled ability to grate and zest with precision and ease. The name "Microplane" refers to both the brand and the type of tool, characterized by its razor-sharp, stainless steel blades.
The history of the Microplane begins in 1990, when brothers Richard and Jeff Grace founded Grace Manufacturing Inc., a company that initially produced precision metal parts for computers. In 1994, while attempting to create a superior woodworking rasp, they inadvertently created a tool with exceptionally sharp edges. This serendipitous invention soon caught the attention of a Canadian homemaker, who discovered its remarkable effectiveness in zesting oranges while baking. Thus, the Microplane’s transition from workshop to kitchen was born.
Efficient Slicing
Microplanes are particularly known for their efficiency in grating hard and soft foods. The tool’s design incorporates a series of tiny, razor-like teeth that effortlessly slice through food rather than tearing or shredding it. This results in finely grated ingredients with minimal effort and waste. The blades are made through a process called photo-etching, which allows for the creation of extremely sharp and precise edges. This is a departure from traditional stamped or punched grating surfaces, which tend to dull more quickly and require more force to use.
Zesting and Grating
One of the most common uses for a Microplane in the kitchen is zesting citrus fruits. The tool removes the outermost layer of the peel, which contains the essential oils that impart vibrant flavor, without digging into the bitter pith beneath. This makes it ideal for adding bright citrus notes to dishes and desserts. Chefs also use Microplanes to grate hard cheeses like Parmesan, creating a fine, fluffy texture that melts quickly and evenly. The tool is equally adept at grating garlic, ginger, nutmeg, chocolate, and even spices like cinnamon sticks.
Ergonomic Design
Beyond its functionality, the Microplane is prized for its ergonomic design. Most models feature a comfortable handle that provides a secure grip, ensuring safety and control during use. Some Microplanes come with additional features such as non-slip bases or protective covers for safe storage.
